Mike’s Story: Reunited through the fire

Mike's housing success, Do Good Multnomah, Serving Homeless Veterans

A few years ago, after years of battling houselessness, Mike's life was transformed. He embraced sobriety, secured a job where he could use his lived experience to serve others at a local shelter, and moved into an apartment with his wife, Diana.

Then, the fire came.

As Mike and Diana prepared for sleep, the air filled with smoke. Within a minute, the building was ablaze, and Mike's instincts kicked into overdrive. He moved his wife to safety, and began to bang on his neighbors doors and accompanied them outside and neighbors to safety.

Within the chaos, he rescued four of his neighbors… including breaking down a door to ensure the escape of one with sleep apnea.

Mike and his wife lost everything they owned in the fire...which forced them both back into shelter. They ended up in different locations.

The two were in separate shelters for months. Eventually, Mike found his way to Do Good at the Behavioral Health Resource Center (BHRC) in Downtown Portland.

He formed an instant bond and relationship with John, his Do Good case manager. Determined as ever, Mike met with John almost daily, and together they worked tirelessly to regain permanent housing.

“it’s his unwavering patience, trust, and respect that sets him apart.”

– John J., describing Mike

A few weeks ago, Mike was approved for a new apartment, and his Do Good support team moved him in, complete with a full set of furniture. After months of separation, he is now reunited and living with his wife.

Now, he can spend time doing what he loves, including cooking and sharing meals with his friends and family.
